Chapter 14

ANDREW carried Jim with him into the living room with both arms wrapped around him. Jim felt Andrew vibrating with pent-up tension; not even his most penetrating purring rumble could dispel Andrew’s anxiety.

Elaine patted a spot on the sofa, the very same spot Tony had been in earlier. Andrew huffed before he stalked over to the indicated place with ill grace. He sat down, shifted Jim in his arms, and glowered at nothing in particular.

Jim had never seen this side of Andrew and wasn’t sure what to make of it. He nudged Andrew’s chin sharply and meowed.

Ronald chuckled. “I think your cat is discomfited by your sulking attitude.”

“I’m not sulking!”

Elaine reached out to gently stroke a finger over Andrew’s cheek. “Honey, you are so sulking.”

“I’m not,” Andrew snapped.

He turned his attention to his mother, the glower still in place. Elaine unfolded her fingers and cupped her son’s cheek. “All right, you’re not. Now, how about you tell us about your new job?”

Andrew’s features relaxed as he slowly started talking about work. His parents sometimes interrupted him with questions, their attention completely focused on their son. Jim scooted down Andrew’s chest and curled up on his lap, listening halfheartedly to Andrew’s words.

Andrew didn’t mention the incident with Larkin. He didn’t mention the one-night stand with Jim, either. He didn’t mention Jim at all. His earlier anger at Andrew came back with a vengeance, and just as he was about to leave Andrew’s lap, Elaine asked, “What about your coworker? What’s his name?”

“Jim,” Ronald supplied with a grin.

“Right. Tony told us you two seemed to have hit it off.”

“He told you that in exactly those words?” Andrew asked, stunned.

“I paraphrased, of course. So, what about him? You didn’t say a word about a new man in your life.”

Andrew shrugged and squirmed uncomfortably on the sofa. Jim complained about the restless moving of Andrew’s legs, which effectively stopped the fidgeting. Andrew stroked Jim a few times, mostly to soothe himself, Jim thought.

Jim caught Andrew’s hand with his forelegs and showed his claws. Andrew froze. “I swear if you’re going to scratch me again, this will be the last time you’re allowed inside the house. And just for the record, nothing Tony says will change my mind. Are we clear?”

Jim meowed but didn’t let go of Andrew’s hand. He’d find a way inside, no matter what Andrew said.

“Maybe Mr. Frosty wants you to tell us about your friend?” Ronald suggested.

“There is nothing to tell.”

Jim hissed.

“Your cat disagrees,” Ronald said, chuckling.

Andrew frowned down at the cat before slowly offering, “He’s a really weird cat. Tony insists he understands everything we say.”

“Drew, what about your friend? Tony seemed to genuinely like him,” Elaine pressed.

“I know.”

“So?”

“So nothing.”

“Ronald! Do something!” Elaine exclaimed in frustration.

“What would you like me to do, dear?”

“I don’t know! Something. You’re his father, he’ll listen to you!”

Ronald snorted. “Elaine, when did he ever volunteer information when I urged him on? If he doesn’t want to talk about his new friend, we won’t be able to convince him otherwise.
